Thumbs and Emotions Hidden there
All of the studies from body language experts shown that every single part of our body shows different aspect of emotion.
But what I find most exhilarating that our thumbs is such a small part and yet they can express such a variety of emotions.
You can go there through confidence, anxiety, nervousness, concern and even more.
I’d like to discuss and tell you some of the traits or you can say hidden signals which can lead you to the whole perspective of others emotions in current situation.
I hope, you’ll enjoy.
Interlaced fingers with thumbs up
While making a statement you could often see a person with a hand position like this.
It indicates high level of confidence and their believe in the message they speak.
Most of the time people like to do this while sitting on their lap or on top of a desk.
It is a good sign of showing power to others as well.
I got this once in a classroom, when I got too cocky with the teacher.
Basically I could go on with the conversation because my arguments were correct (at least I think they were), but I think I got too scared because of his calm voice, the way he looked and of course the main character the hands.
This is the example of how much dominance you can gain only by your body language, so master it so you could become a sheep in a wolves clothing.
Thumbs circling
This is behavior which I don’t have the picture or video, unfortunatelly.
We expose it as we sit with our hands interlaced and our thumbs are just circling or twirling.
This behavior is mostly seen in the office of some kind (let’s say tax office).
Now normally what we do is we take out our smartphones and just scroll through Tik-Tok or hopefully find some more productive ways for spending time as reading Medium.
However, if we don’t have smartphone we have to kill time somehow.
We can check our papers couple of times, start to play with a pen or try to start a conversation.
In the meantime you’ll propably circled around your thumbs.
The point is that the repetitive nature of it is soothing the brain.
Rubbing thumbs
Interwined hands and the thumb on top rubs the one below it repeatedly.
This is a massive pacifier for stress.
You can also see this as they are talking, if they are slightly nervous or anxious.
The only situation I can think of to this indicator, happened in a lawyer office. I think they were expecting to hear some bad news from their lawyer, because woman from this couple was stressed as hell.
I don’t know that couple till today, but after they left the office they look relieved so the news wasn’t so bad after all.
Occupying thumb
Now the occupying thumb, something which we can see only when their hands are laid out flat on the table.
The rule here is simple, further the distance between the index finger and the thumb the higher confidence.
But that’s not only a ratio to confidence, it can also show a person’s commitment to what someone is saying.
And againt the greater the distance, the stronger the commitment.
Sometimes many people use this to control the flow of conversation, the best example to this bosses or teachers.
Withdrawing thumb
The opposite version of occupying thumb.
When we feel insecure or threatened, subconsciously we will withdraw our thumbs.
We can hide them under the fingers.
We tend to decrease the distance between index findeg and thumb, which indicates the same emotions.
It means the person is concerned, worried or threatened.
Look how many emotions we can name and we only used our thumbs this time.
However, it is important to try to find a context, many people doesn’t indicate emotions the same way, so don’t be judgmental after first in.
